On Easter Sunday 1506, a mob moved through Lisbon's Alfama quarter killing New Christians — Jews who had converted under duress — in three days of violence that left thousands dead in the streets between São Domingos church and the riverside warehouses. Berekiah Zarco is a young manuscript illuminator who finds his uncle murdered during the massacre and pursues the killer through a city in terror.
